38th Annual Shiitake Cultivation Workshop

This revised, comprehensive workshop details what you need to know to successfully cultivate Shiitake and other wood decay fungi (Oyster, Lion’s Mane, Nameko, Reishi, Olive Oysterling and Maitake) on wood logs. Learn about effects of cutting times and wood storage prior to inoculation, wood species selection, spawn and tool selection, inoculation tips, stacking options, moisture management, assessing spawn run, disease and pest problems, scheduling production for markets, grading, storage and marketing tips. While we will use some powerpoint format, most of the workshop is demo based to deliver the most practical information possible. This workshop is for both experienced growers and novices whose individual backgrounds enhance the networking experience. Many people attend this workshop multiple times, there is always something new to learn for everyone. Coffee, tea, bakery and lunch (with mushrooms!), information packet and inoculated shiitake log included.
8:30-9am Introduction and overview.
9-10am Discussion and demonstration: wood type selection, assessing effects of different cut times and condition of wood, bark factors and log storage factors prior to inoculation.
10-11am Strain selection, assessing spawn quality and structural suitability for range of tools, tool selection.
11:00-1:00pm Inoculation demo, labels, post inoculation storage, stacking and watering, lunch and networking.
1-2:00pm Soaking and rotating, stacking, irrigating, use of different blankets, assessing spawn run, diseases, practical group quiz on log condition (assessing age of log and log health).
2:00-2:30pm Cultivation details of Maitake, Reishi, Nameko and Lions Mane group.
2:30-3:30pm Group practical quiz, discussion, Q&A.
